While we are at it…

I want to define CMS because I think a lot of people think that a Content Management System and a Blog are two different entities. What Wikipedia has as a definition of CMS:

A content management system (CMS) is a computer application used to create, edit, manage, search and publish various kinds of digital media and electronic text.[1]

Whereas Wikipedia defines blog as the following:

A blog (a contraction of the term weblog) is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. ‘Blog’ can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

So in reality a Content Management System is a way of managing content and a Blog is a way of using a CMS. This will be important as we move forward with this comparo.

I think it’d be more accurate to say that a blog is just a specific type of content (just one example of those “various kinds of….electronic text”).

So any blogging tool is a CMS in that it manages content, the content just happens to be a blog.

A blog is the actual content not the tool for creating it.

For me a blogging tool allows only one stream of content. A CMS allows multiple streams in different sections or categories.

Tim I agree with your single vs multiple streams of content.

Boyink, spot on.

A blogging tool is just a special purpose, single focus CMS.
Single stream vs multi-stream seems to describe it I guess.

In both CMS systems and blog we can change the content as per our wish and requirements. But both are extremely different in term of designing, handling and complexity
