5 Reasons you should read EE Insider

I think anyone that is interested in ExpressionEngine development should frequent EE Insider at least 1-2 times a week. Especialy those that may just be getting their feet wet in the world of ExpressionEngine. So without further ado here is our 5 Reasons You Should Read EE Insider article….

EE Help Chat
My number one reason people should visit EE Insider is that every week the good folks at EE Insider host a help chat. The chat is frequented by other developers in the ExpressionEngine Pro Network so chance are pretty good that if you are having an issue with EE or with one of the many Add-ons for ExpressionEngine then you will be able to get the help you need. One of the great things about ExpressionEngine is the community. This is just another example of how they go out of their way to help those that are coming up through the ranks.

Great Articles for Beginners (and advanced folks alike…)
EE Insider has a large number of articles that give tips and hints on learning ExpressionEngine. The article we linked to here (and we hope to have a similar article later in the week) is a list of Essential EE Add-ons. This introduces us all to modules, plugins and extensions that we may not have been familiar with before. There are so many add-ons that we can’t possibly keep up with them all. Edit Tab Ajax? New to me. Gonna download it later and see if I like it.

Awesome Advanced Tips
Some of the most stupid things annoy me. This was one of them. I hated that I had to click and open up a comment in the Edit tab in order to see whether the content of that comment was spam or not. The article we linked to here shows ho you can add a line of information to the config file that changes the amount of characters that are displayed for the content text for comments. Good stuff…

CodeIgniter?
By this time next year I am hopeful (I think everyone, including EllisLab is as well…) that ExpressionEngine 2.0 will be out and running rampant on the web. As part of that most developers that push the boundaries with ExpressionEngine will need to become familiar with CodeIgniter as that is the php framework that ExpressionEngine will be built on. This should be an extremely helpful tool in add-on development. So articles that gently bring us up to speed on CodeIgniter are most helpful.

Pushing the boundaries
Because Ryan works at Airbag Industries (which recently joined forces with Happy Cog) he has experience with taking ExpressionEngine into areas that it would not normally be thought capable of going. In this series of articles he outlines how Airbag took ExpressionEngine into the realm of Social Networking and lived to tell about it. Really an interesting read.

Another override.css

I said I would post some larger images of the override.css that I have been toying with so people could make out some of the details. Just to be clear this is not as robust an overhaul as the override that Leevi Graham has posted. But I like it.

If you are interested in testing this out a bit just Email Me

YEAY! We’ve relaunched!

Yeay! We’ve relaunched EETemplates.com! The biggest change is that we are now using ExpressionEngine 2 as the foundation for the site and loving it! Nothing really complex going on behind the scenes as EE does a great job of handling sites like this without the need of any add-ons. The only one we are using is FreeForm.

If you are looking for the templates they are still available. I will be releasing another blog template this week after I package it up. I am removing the demos as it was becoming a bear keeping them up to date and locking them down so spammers couldn’t use them as their play place.

If you are interested in blogging about how you use ExpressionEngine just contact me and we’ll make it happen. I am looking for add-on reviews, tutorials, code tid-bits, new add-on previews and news.

So another year has passed. Most of us have gorged ourselves on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years feasts. Now is the time for reflection and planning. I know I have a list of items that I want to learn, do, accomplish and create this next year. 2010 is going to be fun. After all… this is the year Hal comes to life and takes us to space right?

Anyway, I compiled a list of top blog posts from EETemplates and Ranked the templates….

HeadSpace Releases a ExpressionEngine Client Guide for FREE

This is one of those things that we all need but rarely ever make time to do. With each custom client we do we provide a bunch of tutorials for how to do things in their website. But I have often thought it would be nice to have a PDF that explains the basics of the ExpressionEngine CMS to a new user so they can start managing a website not necessarily building sites but entering content. Well Headspace is a design firm out of Nova Scotia and they have release a wonderful PDF that is just that. You can get it by clicking on this link to go to Headspace.com
